Why Gender Equality
FGM SURVIVOR STORIES
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is happening now. Every day, girls and women around the world are violated, hurt and even killed in the name of ‘cultural tradition’. At Equality Now, we are committed to telling their stories, and calling out governments that are failing to end this harmful practice.
TRAFFICKING SURVIVOR STORIES
Trafficking of women and children for sexual exploitation is a criminal industry that spans the globe despite the fact that international law and the laws of more than 140 countries criminalize it. Frequently, the end destination of sex trafficking is the commercial sex industry, which continues to expand, is linked to organized crime and perpetuates gender inequality.
Adolescent Girls’ Legal Defense Fund
As the only international organization that does strategic litigation (taking carefully-selected cases to court) to defend the rights of adolescent girls, Equality Now supports girls who are facing human rights abuses.
The main objectives of our Adolescent Girls' Legal Defense Fund (AGLDF) are to empower girls to advocate for themselves; make sure the justice system works for girls when their rights are violated; set precedents with the case of one girl that will have a broad impact on thousands of girls just like her; use cases to advocate for better laws and policies to protect girls; and raise the visibility of local cases to show their national, regional and international impact.
