Sylvia Obaga

Regional Communications Manager, Africa and MENA

Sylvia Obaga joined Equality Now in September 2021. She is a transformational advocacy communications strategist, creative storyteller, and communications specialist with over 15 years of progressive work experience in the non-profit sector, nine of which include leading advocacy communications in various organizations including Amref Health Africa, Save the Children, Oxfam, IPAS, and the Advocacy Accelerator.

Her adaptability, curiosity, and adventurous spirit have led her to work in varied humanitarian contexts in Eastern Africa such as Somalia and Sudan, environmental advocacy in Africa, and later in health development with a focus on SRHR and Gender Equality in the continent. A creative at heart, she has led several regional digital advocacy initiatives including Amref’s Y-ACT Movement, UNFPA’s YouthPowerHub, and the ICPD+25 Global Online Caravan. Being passionate about social advocacy, communications, women’s health and their right to justice has led her to curate several regional and in-country multi-channel campaign portfolios that have led to behavior change and policy transformation on gender and youth development.

She holds a Masters (Hons.) in International Communications Management (Development) from the University of Warwick (UK), and a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations from the United States International University – Africa, with auxiliary qualifications in social & behavior change communications (SBCC), project management, technical writing, and photography.

She describes herself as a strong believer in women’s empowerment as she dreams of a world where women are free to express, free to learn, free to love, and free to experience. Thus, it comes as no surprise that her all-time favorite read is Women Who Run with the Wolves by Clarissa Pankola Estes that speaks to her free-spirit nature. In her free time, you will find Sylvia sampling new experiences that may include culinary indulgences, creative experiential events, and meeting people. She ultimately loves to travel and soak in other cultures.
