Dear {…} :

In 1995, at the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, governments from around the world pledged to revoke any remaining laws that discriminate on the basis of sex, as part of the Beijing Platform for Action.

Since then, targets for action have repeatedly been set, including by the UN General Assembly in 2015, with member states adopting a sustainable development framework calling for the elimination of discriminatory laws and policies to promote global equality.

However, despite these targets, and despite the progress that has been made over the last 20 years, the commitments made in the Beijing Platform for Action have not been universally met.

I ask that your government renews its commitment to the promises made in Beijing by undertaking a comprehensive review of all your laws in order to identify and reform any that are discriminatory or which have a discriminatory impact upon women and girls. This is also in line with the pledge made in Beijing to “ensure equality and non-discrimination under the law and in practice.”

With strong laws that defend and promote the rights of women and girls, current and future generations - and the communities in which they live - will thrive. The time has come for all governments to turn words into action by eliminating all laws that discriminate on the basis of sex.

Thank you for your attention, and in anticipation of your government’s commitment to improve the lives of women and girls everywhere.

Respectfully yours,
