Bahrain is denying women equal nationality rights - Equality Now joint submission to the Human Rights Commission (CCPR) 121st Session October 2017
Bahrain – Adoption of List of Issues at the International Convent on Civil and Political Rights
October 2017 - November 2017
The submission deals with our concern about the sex-based discrimination against women under the law in Bahrain. The Citizenship Act of 1963, as amended, denies Bahraini women the right to pass on their nationality to their children and spouses, preventing women from enjoying citizenship rights on an equal basis with men. The submission also addresses our concern about the exemption from punishment under the Bahraini Penal Code (Article 353) for rapists and perpetrators who marry their victims.
