Founded in 1992, Equality Now fights for the protection and promotion of the human rights of women and girls around the world through legal advocacy. Working with grassroots women’s and human rights organizations and individual activists, Equality Now documents violence and discrimination against women and mobilizes national and international action to support efforts to stop these abuses. The organization’s work is focused into four main program areas: Discrimination in Law, Sexual Violence, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), and Sex Trafficking.
With offices in New York City, London and Nairobi and a presence in Amman, Jordan and Washington, D.C., Equality now has a staff of 27, plus seven key consultants and is governed by the 13-member Board of Directors and 14-member UK Trustees group. Additional leadership and support are provided by the Advisory Board and the Adolescent Girls’ Legal Defense Fund Advisory Board.
New board leadership and new executive leadership have launched an ambitious strategic plan for Equality Now’s growth. The organization’s budget has increased and will continue to increase significantly, due in large part to a major, multi-year grant from a key funder. Current investment priorities include capacity building with a particular emphasis on expanding development and communications activities and expansion of the organization’s Equality Action Network. Additional investment is being made to add staff who will strengthen the organization’s management team. The organization’s FY2014 budget is close to $5 million.
Reporting to the Global Director in this newly created position, the Director of Development & Communications will be a member of Equality Now’s management team and will provide leadership, strategic direction and management for Equality Now’s growing development program as well as a complementary global communications initiative. The Director will take charge of a recently completed development and communications plan and build a high performance team to increase and diversify financial support in the U.S. and Europe, and to lead the organization into a new era of donor outreach via a worldwide rebranding initiative and strategic public communications across all media with the goal of better informing, engaging and influencing priority donor groups and further developing Equality Now’s Equality Action Network (comprised of activists and donors).
The Director of Development & Communications will manage a team of eight in New York, London and Nairobi. Additionally, there are budgeted resources for engaging consultants to advance organizational re-branding, design and integration of data management systems, and expansion of the organization’s activist network.
The Director of Development & Communications will have ongoing leadership and responsibility for the following:
- Serve as a strategic thought partner with the Global Director, the management team and other staff;
- In partnership with the Global Director, management team and other staff, build upon priorities, goals and activities established in the organization’s three-year development and communications plan;
- Develop and implement short- and long-term strategies and plans with the goals of expanding Equality Now’s donor base and overall contributions, strengthening the voice and footprint of Equality Now’s leadership and relationships with various constituencies, including partners, policymakers, activists and donors, and further developing Equality Now’s Activist Network;
- Articulate clear benchmarks for progress; and identify and develop the partnerships, strategies and tools to implement these priorities;
- Inspire and support the staff in their work, facilitating coordination and teamwork; ensure the team’s work is high-impact and strategically focused and in furtherance of the key performance indicators identified in the communications and development plan;
- Maintain a proactive, creative leadership role in the identification, cultivation and solicitation of individual and institutional donors; cultivate and directly solicit key donors, working with the Global Director, key staff and board members, as appropriate;
- Lead and supervise the development and communications team in a fiscally sound manner; ensure that appropriate systems, tools and procedures are in place;
- Supervise prospect research and tracking; ensure that appropriate donor stewardship is consistently implemented;
- Develop and maintain close working relationships with the philanthropic community and individual donors and board members; serve as a visible spokesperson and advocate for Equality Now’s mission and programs in the funding community;
- Work with staff across the organization to amplify Equality Now’s policy and advocacy work through strategic communications;
- Working with external consultants, lead Equality Now’s rebranding efforts;
- Improve internal communication by helping to develop and formalize tools to help Equality Now foster internal collaboration and keep staff and board informed of activities and decisions.
The Director of Development & Communications should be an energetic, flexible, self-starting team player with the following experience and qualifications:
- An understanding of the power of linking fundraising and strategic communications; experience using new and emerging media for constituency building, activism and fundraising is strongly desired;
- At least 10 years of successful experience in development and communications, ideally gained in the social justice advocacy/policy arena; credibility and experience to connect Equality Now to a range of resources and opportunities outside the organization;
- Outstanding written and oral communications skills, with the presence, credibility and skills to develop and sustain a broad range of relationships; highly developed listening skills;
- Successful experience raising money from a variety of sources, including major donors and foundations;
- A strong track record developing and executing short- and long-range strategic plans to guide programmatic and organizational efforts;
- Experience working with diverse communities, ideally internationally, across race, class, ethnic, political and geographic boundaries;
- A direct, honest, and respectful approach to problem solving, with the ability to foster collaboration and contribute to building a strong sense of community among staff;
- Ability to thrive when working under deadlines; strong project, time and budget management skills, and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously without sacrificing attention to detail; a willingness to share in both ‘big picture’ thinking and administrative tasks;
- A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent (an advanced degree is preferred); ability to travel internationally occasionally;
- Written and spoken Fluency in English; Fluency in French, Spanish and/or Arabic is desired.
