Sophie Gebreselassie joined Equality Now in May 2017. Sophie has a background in civil rights and the rule of law and is a New York qualified attorney. Most recently, Sophie completed a clerkship under the Honorable Todd E. Edelman of the Superior Court for the District of Columbia, and worked as an attorney on the labor-side of a labor and employment law firm. Prior to law school, she was the Communications Manager at the World Justice Project and supported the global and reproductive health portfolio of a communications firm. Sophie graduated cum laude from New York University School of Law and holds a B.A. in International Relations from Brown University, USA.
Sophie is dedicated to defending the rights of marginalized and vulnerable members of our global community. She is continually inspired by individuals who are fighting for justice for themselves and others in the face of astonishing oppression and hardship. She considers it an honor to be able to work on their behalf. Her favorite quote is from Theodore Parker: "I do not pretend to understand the moral universe; the arc is a long one, my eye reaches but little ways; I cannot calculate the curve and complete the figure by the experience of sight; I can divine it by conscience. And from what I see I am sure it bends towards justice.”
Outside the office, Sophie enjoys discovering new music, learning new instruments and spending time with family and friends.
