Why Gender Equality
Why The Law
We believe that legal equality is the first step towards gender equality.
THE LAW IS STATEMENT OF YOUR WORTH
A country’s laws set the tone for how it treats its people, and how its people treat each other. When women and girls have fewer rights than men and boys, violence and discrimination are legitimised and ignored.
THE LAW IS A TOOL TO END VIOLENCE & DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS
When a country’s law does not recognize violence - then it perpetuates and sanctions this violence. The law is a powerful tool when combating harmful practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM) or child “marriage”, as well as sexual violence and exploitation. The law can be used to hold perpetrators to account, as well as defining the obligation that governments have to protect women and girls from violence and discrimination. The law is a central pillar in the work needed to end violence and discrimination against women and girls across the world.
THE LAW SHOULD OFFER WOMEN AND GIRLS ACCESS TO JUSTICE
When a woman or girl is assaulted, exploited, or subject to FGM or child “marriage”, they should be able to seek justice They deserve access to a criminal justice system that is survivor friendly, accessible, and that prosecutes and punishes perpetrators.
This access to justice is not only important for the individual, but also acts as a deterrent for others.
