Global Director of Programmes

Niki joined Equality Now in November 2016. Previously, Niki was the Head of Programme Development and Policy at VSO International, where she worked on programs to ensure transformative change for impoverished and marginalized people. Prior to that, she was the Executive Director of Engender where she worked with the UK government, the EU and the UN on gender policy and ensuring accountability at both national and international levels through evidence and analysis. Niki has over 30 years of experience working to address injustice. In that time, she learned that people are not poor or vulnerable by chance; they have been excluded, marginalized, exploited and impoverished by inequitable systems. Niki believes that just as these systems have been created by human beings, they can also be undone and it begins with the law. An agreement of respect and equality between people of a place, or even the world, can spark meaningful change for each other.

Niki’s shero is Maya Angelou for her sassy attitude and dedication as a civil rights activist. Her favorite quote comes from Leonard Cohen’s song Anthem, “Ring in the bells that still can ring, forget your perfect offering, there’s a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.”

When she is not championing equality for women and girls, Niki can be found creating art through painting and sculpting. She also loves all forms of dance (Pina Bausch is her favorite choreographer).
