Nawmi is Equality Now’s Global Legal Advisor. In this role, she is responsible for advancing Equality Now’s vision to bring about sex/gender equality in the law, prevent gender-based harms, and enable access to justice for victims and survivors of gender-based discrimination and abuse.
Nawmi is a trained lawyer with a background in human rights. For the last 9 years, she has shaped her career in the NGO sector, working on various human rights issues, particularly on issues faced by women and girls, including women and girls with disabilities. She is most proud of the real-life legal and policy-level reforms that she was able to contribute to through some of the research projects that she was fortunate to be part of.
Her feminist inspiration comes from the quote from Gloria Steinem “Any woman who chooses to behave like a full human being should be warned that the armies of the status quo will treat her as something of a dirty joke. That’s their natural and first weapon. She will need her sisterhood.” This quote is what motivated her to work in a women-led organization for the last 4 years supporting grassroots-level women and young people-led rights-based initiatives.
Originally from Bangladesh, Nawmi is currently based in Malaysia. She is fluent in English and Bangla. Outside of work, Nawmi enjoys cooking, listening to music and writing poetry.
