Regional Representative - Strategic Legal Advocacy for Women and Girls' Rights, North America

Equality Now is searching for a Regional Representative who will set an ambitious, creative, and high profile advocacy agenda for Equality Now in North America.

ABOUT US

Founded in 1992, Equality Now fights for the protection and promotion of the human rights of women and girls around the world through legal advocacy. Working with grassroots women’s and human rights organizations and individual activists, Equality Now documents violence and discrimination against women and mobilizes national and international action to support efforts to stop these abuses. The organization’s work is focused on four main program areas: Legal Equality, End Sexual Violence, End Harmful Practices, and End Sex Trafficking.

With 48 staff in the United States, the United Kingdom, Kenya, Lebanon, Jordan, India, Georgia, and the Netherlands, Equality Now is governed by an 11-member Board of Directors, a 6-member UK Trustees group, and a 6-member Africa Board. The organization had an ambitious 2017-2021 strategic plan which resulted in enhanced presence and work in MENA, Eurasia, and LAC regions. The organization will be embarking on creating its next strategic plan (2022-2026) in 2021. Current priorities include expanding programs in MENA, the Americas, and Eurasia as well as organizational capacity building. The 2021 budget is $8.9 million.

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director of Programmes and matrixed to the Director of Communications, the Regional Representative will straddle the Programme and Communications teams to set an ambitious, creative, and high profile advocacy agenda for Equality Now in North America. As the campaign strategist in the region, they will identify and take opportunities to raise awareness and advocate for legal change in our four thematic areas - Legal Equality, End Sexual Violence, End Sex Trafficking, End Harmful Practices - with the aim of inspiring and influencing decision makers, civil society, activists, the media, and Equality Now supporters to take action. The Regional Representative will work closely with the Global Leads for Legal Equality, End Sexual Violence, End Sex Trafficking, and End Harmful Practices.

As a leading media contributor in the women’s rights space, Equality Now uses our platform to amplify issues affecting women and girls across the globe and attract national and international attention to otherwise unknown situations. As part of the U.S. Campaign Team, the Regional Representative will identify emerging trends in the U.S. that are relevant to Equality Now’s mission, networking with other actors in the space, and designing high profile campaigns that push relevant issues into the U.S. consciousness. She/he will represent Equality Now in strategic meetings and act as network builder, commentator and media spokesperson.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Working with the Director of Programmes and thematic Global Leads to identify areas of focus for our work in the United States, identifying trends and opportunities;

  • Leading and facilitating program strategy development for the U.S. Campaign Team, including by:

    • Developing creative and effective campaigns or strategies to highlight critical areas for reform.

    • Acting as Equality Now’s media spokesperson for U.S. issues

    • Responding to relevant inbound media stories and breaking news stories.

  • Building and strengthening relationships with civil society, partners, community leaders, and other advocacy groups, including both traditional and new allies, and representing the organization at related events/meetings;

  • Keeping abreast of all developments on women’s rights in the U.S. and networking with the groups and influencers at the forefront of the change to inform EN’s advocacy agenda;

  • Representing Equality Now in strategic meetings, including of the NY State Anti-Trafficking Coalition, the ERA Coalition, U.S. Anti-FGM and Anti-Child Marriage groups, and the newly formed coalition on criminal justice reform;

  • Taking the lead in strategic litigation, including working with law firms to draft relevant amicus briefs on issues of concern to Equality Now;

  • Producing high-standard written products for internal and external audiences, based on original research and analysis;

  • Working with the Communication and Development team to understand matters of interest to donors and supporters;

  • Working closely with the Global Executive Director s/he will also oversee the management of the Generosity of Girls Fund - subgranting, monitoring, learning and reporting.

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

You will have the head of lawyer and the heart of an activist and be a forward thinking, passionate, agenda setting campaigner, who is as comfortable with providing a gendered analysis of key issues as they are on camera talking about it. Other desired qualifications and competencies include:

  • A law degree or a master’s degree in a relevant discipline;

  • Approximately ten years’ relevant professional experience in legal analysis and strategy development and/or human rights, women’s rights, international advocacy or international law;

  • Comfortable with working in a fast-paced media and editorial environment;

  • Evidence of experience as a commentator and media spokesperson;

  • Demonstrable experience of using social media to campaign for change and thought leadership;

  • Proven experience building and maintaining networks and ideally come with their own network in the women’s rights movement;

  • Strong analytical skills and excellent written and oral communication;

  • Demonstrated commitment to human rights with a focus on women’s human rights and gender equality, including preferably an understanding of the experiences and needs of adolescent girls;

  • Ability to work as part of a team and across teams and collaborate respectfully to achieve shared goals;

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work under pressure in a multicultural environment;

  • Strong organization and planning skills with a drive for results, outcomes, and impact

  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally.

LOCATION

The ideal candidate will have proximity to New York or Washington, D.C.

SALARY

The salary range for this position is $75,000 to $85,000.
