Why Gender Equality

Our Approach

Our staff of expert lawyers and campaigners work across the world to build a just world for women and girls. We use a unique combination of legal advocacy, regional partnership-building and community mobilization to encourage governments to adopt, improve and enforce laws that protect and promote the rights of women and girls around the world.

Collaborating with change-makers

Equality Now relies on the knowledge, understanding and connections of local communities to spark systemic change. We respond to their need.

We collaborate with: individuals, institutions, and coalitions encompassing grassroots activists, survivors, legal reformers, lawyers, service providers, corporations and national and regional women’s organizations. Equality Now relies on their knowledge, understanding and connections to local communities to spark systemic change.

USING THE LAW

A country’s laws set the tone for how it treats its people, and how its people treat each other. When women and girls have fewer rights than men and boys, violence and discrimination are legitimised and ignored.

Amplifying voices

At the core of Equality Now is a belief that survivors must be listened to and given a platform to speak. As we saw with #MeToo, sharing your story can ignite a movement. From street theater highlighting Iraq’s “Marry your Rapist” laws to supporting survivors of child marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM) in the US to share their stories, Equality Now continues to ensure that survivors have a voice within the movement.

Our international network of activists and supporters takes action to hold governments responsible for ending legal inequality, sex trafficking, sexual violence and harmful practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM) & child marriage.
