Program Officer End Harmful Practices
Felister Makandi Gitonga joined Equality Now in September 2017. Felister is a Pan-African feminist with a passion for gender equality, social justice and equal rights for all. She has over five years’ experience in women’s rights and human rights at national (Kenya), regional and international levels. Felister has worked with women’s rights organizations such as FEMNET, Young Women’s Leadership Institute, World YWCA and Healthy Women Matters and is an alumnae of the prestigious Ship for World Global Youth Leaders program sponsored by the Government of Japan. She has also served as Vice Chair of the Nairobi University Journalism Student Association (NUJOSA). Felister holds a Bachelor’s degree in media and journalism from the University of Nairobi, Kenya.
Felister is dedicated to seeing the injustices committed against women addressed, and knows that for this to happen laws must be in place to punish perpetrators. Her shero is African feminist and author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and her favorite quote is by Thomas Sankara: “The revolution and women's liberation go together. We do not talk of women's emancipation as an act of charity or out of a surge of human compassion. It is a basic necessity for the revolution to triumph. Women hold up the other half of the sky.”
Outside the office, Felister loves traveling to wildlife conservatories, reading books and shopping.
