ABOUT US

Founded in 1992, Equality Now fights for the protection and promotion of the human rights of women and girls around the world through legal advocacy. Working with grassroots women’s and human rights organizations and individual activists, Equality Now documents violence and discrimination against women and mobilizes national and international action to support efforts to stop these abuses. The organization’s work is focused on four main program areas: Legal Equality, End Sexual Violence, End Harmful Practices, and End Sex Trafficking.

With offices in New York, London, Nairobi and Beirut and a presence in Amman, Jordan and Washington, D.C., Equality Now has a staff of 50 and is governed by an 11-member Board of Directors, a 12-member UK Trustees group and a 5-member Africa Board.

The organization has an ambitious strategic plan for Equality Now’s growth for 2017-2021. Current priorities include expanding programs in MENA, the Americas and Eurasia as well as capacity building with an emphasis on development and communications activities. The 2019 budget is $7.3 million.


POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Finance and Administration (DFA) must be a mission-focused, seasoned, strategic, and process-minded leader with experience scaling an organization and ideally leading a global finance and administration team. The DFA reports to the Global Executive Director (GED) and serves as a member of the Senior Management Team (SMT). The DFA oversees all business and administrative functions that support and inform Equality Now’s work. Core functions include finance, human resources, administration, IT, facilities and risk management.

The DFA manages a staff of 6, in New York, London and Nairobi and works closely with various departmental consultants. The DFA must ensure that business and administrative functions fully support and enhance the operations of a fast-paced, dynamic and diverse environment. This will be accomplished by modernizing finance, accounting, human resources and IT systems and processes and fostering an overall culture of high-level performance and service, with improvement and innovation as top priorities.


Duties & Responsibilities:
Finance and accounting

  • Lead, develop, coordinate and maintain timely, accurate financial management reporting and forecasting
  • Ensure all systems comply with internal policies and procedures and all statutory requirements
  • Manage and support the annual global audit in conjunction with external auditors
  • Ensure all accounting systems and activities are accurate, transparent secure and well documented
  • Manage all banking and investment accounts; cash flow and provide regular cash flow forecasts
  • Oversee all accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, and benefits administration functions and staff
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure security, best practices, legal compliance and continuous improvements and service delivery
  • Liaise with the Treasurer and Board committees; provide financial reports and presentations

Payroll and Human Resources

  • Ensure accuracy, timeliness and efficiency of payroll and related systems and services; ensure platforms meet the ongoing needs of the organization
  • Oversee all Human Resources functions including recruitment, on-boarding, staff reviews, insurance and benefits plans and providers, benefits enrollment, pension contributions, leave balance accounting, etc.

Budget and Grant Accounting

  • Ensure accuracy, timeliness and efficiency of payroll and related systems and services; ensure platforms meet the ongoing needs of the organization
  • Oversee all Human Resources functions including recruitment, on-boarding, staff reviews, insurance and benefits plans and providers, benefits enrollment, pension contributions, leave balance accounting, etc.

Office Administration, Information Technology

  • Oversee and supervise the administrative function, including facility/office management, safety, equipment, communication systems, education, training, policies and procedures
  • Evaluate the need for new systems and technology to meet accounting, administrative, communication, systems migration and office management needs; plan and manage implementation of improved systems; ensure staff support, education and oversight
  • Oversee management of all contracts and financial commitments and related record retention systems

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience in nonprofit financial management
  • Genuine passion for and commitment to Equality Now’s mission. Understanding of the context and issues of women’s rights and gender equality.
  • Experience in progressively responsible finance and administration leadership roles, with comprehensive expertise and experience in budgeting and financial planning, analysis and reporting and audits.
  • A thorough understanding of business-process improvement, with proven problem-solving and planning experience within a complex nonprofit environment.
  • Demonstrated success in leading a diverse team with the willingness and ability to be hands-on in all aspects of operations.
  • Ability to think strategically and holistically about the interplay among business processes, financial resources, and institutional planning; to set challenging and attainable goals, establish realistic priorities, and work with, inspire and motivate others.
  • Demonstrated success in providing enterprise-wide leadership in financial analysis and reporting to support decision-making, budget development, and budget management.
  • Demonstrated ability to strategically design and implement a robust financial system supporting all facets of global nonprofit business operations and growth
  • Experience in implementing systems, adjusting business processes and organizational culture to improve and efficiency, analysis, reporting, controls and stakeholder buy-in.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and clearly explain complex issues and their financial and operational implications to varied stakeholders. Excellent negotiating skills.

Education, skills

  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field; Master’s degree and CPA preferred.
  • Extensive experience in financial and grant reporting in a multi-currency organization
  • Experience with Quick Books, Raiser’s Edge and Google Suite a plus
