Communications Officer, New York

Equality Now seeks a creative, well-connected and self-starting Communications Officer to maximize press and social media to support the advocacy and fundraising objectives of our Program and Development teams.

Women and girls are discriminated against socially, economically, and in the law around the world. Equality Now seeks to bring about legal and systemic change to address gender inequality. To achieve this our programs endeavour to establish and expand laws that protect the rights of women and girls, repeal discriminatory laws, ensure existing good laws and policies are implemented through building sustainable partnerships with others (particularly civil society and other local actors) that will sustain the changes and further the equality agenda.

Position

Equality Now seeks a creative, well-connected and self-starting Communications Officer to maximize press and social media to support the advocacy and fundraising objectives of our Program and Development teams.

Working within the Global Communications Team and in close collaboration with the Snr. Media Manager and Advocacy Campaign Manager you will use social media and press coverage to expand issue and brand awareness, and to educate and inspire target audiences. This will be in line with agreed campaign work and to increase Equality Now’s advocacy impact and supporter pools.

This will mean having: an eye for a news story and thought leadership opportunities; good journalist and influencer connections; strong working knowledge of social channels; the ability to conduct interviews with a range of people (from survivors to politicians); exceptional copywriting skills. You will also be comfortable representing EN at events and covering them. Specifically you will be responsible for:

Strategy and tactics

  • Work with the advocacy and development teams to help build out campaign briefs, offering advice on media, PR and social media plans to deliver on campaign goals.
  • Contribute to the content and maintenance of our editorial calendar.
  • Work with the Global Comms team to build out and implement our social media strategy

Content creation

  • Create key messaging documents for campaigns and stories.
  • Help create a bank of case studies, representing the breadth of our work thematically and geographically.
  • Write high quality editorial copy for a range of audiences and outlets.
  • Commission photography, graphics or video to complement work, especially for social.
  • Plan or support Equality Now events for purposes of PR and content.

Press and Media

  • Field press inquiries, co-ordinating interviews and spokespeople and briefing internal staff.
  • Proactively pitch and secure quality media coverage in a range of outlets.
  • Research and write press releases and op eds in line with campaign needs.
  • Monitor media to identify issues to respond to, in collaboration with the Advocacy Campaign Manager and Program team.
  • Write and/or commission thought leadership content to push our position as an expert and thought leader on key issues
  • Manage relationships with existing media partners and build new media contacts; steward a strong network of journalists in the Americas (North and South) to expand our media impact.
  • Monitor and report on press coverage.

Social Media

  • Use our Twitter account to generate interest in EN’s press work and curate content from influencers to build our position as a go-to organisation on women and girls rights.
  • Work with the entire Comms team to create content for our Facebook and Instagram accounts.
  • Monitor social media coverage and contribute to monthly reports.

Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 3-5 years experience in media and social media
  • Strong editorial judgment
  • An understanding of human rights and a passion for social justice
  • Demonstrable ability to produce strong and engaging communications content
  • Brilliant copywriting skills and an ability to translate complex content into compelling copy, adapting writing for a variety of audiences and platforms
  • A demonstrable network of US journalist contacts
  • A creative person with great ideas for bringing our work to life, the ability to articulate and disseminate these into a brief, and the practical skills to execute on these ideas.
  • Entrepreneurial, results-oriented, able to set priorities, highly organized
  • Knowledge of brand and messaging principles
  • Willingness to pitch in and do what’s needed to accomplish goals
  • Sense of humor; compassion and willingness to see things from many cultural angles
  • Proficiency in MS Office and Adobe Photoshop or other visual program tools
  • Able to use CMS, social media and Email platform tools.
