Regional Director - Middle East and North Africa Region

Experienced Regional Director sought for an international human rights organization working for the protection and promotion of the rights of women and girls worldwide to lead and manage our work in the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA). This is a full-time position based in Amman, Jordan. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated, dynamic and experienced individual to deliver a flagship program on women’s and girls’ rights in the Arab World. The successful candidate is an effective communicator, expert manager, successful fundraiser, facilitator and networker. In the initial stage, the MENA Regional Director will manage a program officer and later recruit a program assistant/office manager. The Director and her/his team work closely with our Nairobi, London, and New York Directors, Program Managers, and communications and development staff. The Regional Director will be responsible for: representing Equality Now in the region and representing regional women’s rights issues globally; maintaining and building partnership, bringing together national and regional networks; developing and implementing an annual work plan and budget in line with their priorities; hiring and supervising an office assistant, program staff, and consultants; staying abreast of significant developments and trends in the region and in the field of women’s rights, serving as spokesperson for Equality Now, including through interacting with the media and representing the organization at high-level meetings and conferences, supporting fundraising efforts and stewardship; and managing accounting, administration and human resources related to regional office operations.

Equality Now is a legal advocacy organization that works for the protection and promotion of the human rights of women and girls around the world. Working with grassroots and human rights organizations and individual activists, Equality Now documents violence and discrimination against women and girls and mobilizes international, regional and local action to support efforts to stop these abuses. Our work is focused into four main program areas: Discrimination in Law, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Trafficking, and Sexual Violence; and a cross cutting focus on the rights of adolescent girls through our Adolescent Girls’ Legal Defense Fund (AGLDF).

Founded in 1992, Equality Now seeks to achieve systemic and tangible impact in its program areas to progress the rights of women and girls. We are undertaking organizational development to strengthen governance and institutional systems that enable leadership, efficiency, oversight, and responsiveness.

Scope of Work:

The MENA Regional Director’s work is guided by Equality Now’s strategic plan and organizational policies.

Goal:

Equality Now will lay the groundwork for, and then open, a physical office, with the aims of exponentially increasing its capacity to respond to women rights violations, to increase our support to women’s rights organization and advocate internationally on issues relating to women in the Arab World.

Responsibilities:

Management and Leadership:

  • Register Equality Now in Jordan, set up an office and ensure on-going compliance with national laws governing international organization
  • Develop short and long-term regional strategies for Equality Now’s work in the region and workplans for all staff in coordination with thematic heads as applicable.
  • Oversee and monitor successful implementation of the regional work plan in close collaboration with program managers, and recommend changes to the plan as needed.
  • Support the monitoring and evaluation of program implementation in the region
  • Lead the MENA team in responding to urgent women’s rights issues as they arise
  • Maintain positive donor relations
  • Engage with relevant government officials and key influencers on Equality Now’s active campaigns in the region
  • Employ and supervise an office manager/ program assistant and the Program Officer and build a MENA team
  • Oversee all financial and human resources management for the office, in coordination with headquarters.
  • Manage all consultant relationships for the region.
  • Liaise regularly with Finance and Administration staff based in New York on matters related to office operations.

Partnerships:

  • Strengthen work with and identify crucial partners, including scholars, lawyers, activists, organizations, and government officials
  • Convene women’s rights groups to determine value added to existing efforts and networks and home in on strategic priorities in the region
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local, regional and international NGOs and key stakeholders to advance implementation of Equality Now's strategic plan.
  • Provide leadership and strengthen collaboration with and represent Equality Now on international, regional and national women’s groups and networks

Fundraising:

  • Identify and cultivate additional funding sources for Equality Now’s work in the MENA region in close collaboration with Program Managers and Equality Now’s Development Team in soliciting grants, developing proposals and reporting to donors on active grants
  • Fine-tune, oversee and develop fundraising activities of the MENA Office, including outreach to relevant foundations, individual and institutional donors and other funders, including an annual assessment and report of funding opportunities, successes, failures.

MENA visibility:

  • Serve as Equality Now’s spokesperson on the region
  • Work with the media team to help develop and implement a media strategy and engage with media and the public on questions about the region
  • In close collaboration with the Communications Department, develop and implement a program communications strategy to increase support and visibility from key audiences in the region.

Requirements:

  • JD or Graduate degree; professional background in international law a plus
  • 10 years of experience working at regional level on women’s and girls’ rights (preferably with an international organization)
  • At least 5 years senior management experience, across regions and time zones is a plus
  • Experience working with partners and governments
  • Strong writing and communication skills;
  • Contacts and experience with donors, fundraising and reporting
  • Experience setting up a new office and team highly desirable
  • Advocacy experience
  • Strong representation, networking and facilitation skills
  • Knowledge of international and regional human rights framework and relevant human rights mechanisms/instruments;
  • Fluency in Arabic/French in addition to English a plus;
  • Financial management experience
  • Interpersonal skills to manage effectively and respectfully a team in a small office and with colleagues internationally;

This position will require international travel, approximately 3 - 4 trips per year.

Salary:

Commensurate with experience.
