Kavinya E. Makau joined Equality Now’s Africa office in May 2013 as the Program Officer for the Solidarity for African Women’s Rights (SOAWR) Coalition campaign. She is a feminist lawyer with over 10 years of experience. Since 2006, she has engaged in Pan-African advocacy and research on women's human rights with regards to transitional justice, the intersection between HIV/ AIDS and Violence Against Women in conflict situations and leadership development. Ms. Makau received her law degree from the University of Reading-UK and is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. She holds an LL.M in International Legal Studies, with a focus on women’s human rights, from Georgetown University Law Center-Washington D.C., where she was a Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa Fellowfrom 2011-2012.
