Kavinya E. Makau joined Equality Now’s Nairobi office in May 2013 as a Program Officer for Discrimination in Law. She will oversee the SOAWR Campaign. Ms. Makau is a legal professional with more than eight years' experience, starting out in commercial law and litigation at Njoroge Regeru & Company Advocates and Amin & Amin-Barristers at Law in Kenya. Since 2006, Ms. Makau has engaged in Pan-African women’s human rights advocacy in a wide range of areas including, peace-building, transitional justice, the intersection between HIV & AIDS and Violence Against Women in conflict situations, and most recently, in leadership development as Akili Dada’s Innovation in Leadership Program Director. She holds an LL.M in International Legal Studies, with a focus on women’s human rights, from Georgetown University Law Center-Washington D.C., where she was a 2011-2012 Georgetown Law Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa Fellow. She is a member of the Law Society of Kenya and the Young Women’s Leadership Institute. She received her undergraduate LL.B law degree from the University of Reading-UK and is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
