Kavinya E. Makau joined Equality Now’s Africa office in May 2013 as the Program Officer for the Solidarity for African Women’s Rights (SOAWR) Coalition campaign and became Project Manager in January 2016. She is a feminist lawyer with over 10 years of experience. Since 2006, she has engaged in Pan-African advocacy and research on women's human rights with regards to transitional justice, the intersection between HIV/ AIDS and Violence Against Women in conflict situations and leadership development. Ms. Makau received her law degree from the University of Reading-UK and is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. She holds an LL.M in International Legal Studies, with a focus on women’s human rights, from Georgetown University Law Center-Washington D.C., where she was a Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa Fellowfrom 2011-2012.
