Jean-Paul Murunga

Program Officer

Anti-Harmful Practices

Jean-Paul Murunga joined Equality Now in January 2016. He is an expert in child protection and has eight years of experience in human rights, human rights litigation and humanitarian assistance work in Africa (Kenya and Djibouti). Prior to joining Equality Now, he was a legal officer with the law firm Robi Kerato Partners Advocates in Nairobi, served four years as Program Officer of Child Protection & Community Development at Lutheran World Federation Department for World Service in Djibouti, and was an Eligibility Intern for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Prior to these positions, he ran weekly legal aid clinics at the Kenya Human Rights Commission and Refugee Consortium of Kenya, offering legal aid, advice and representation to victims and survivors of human rights violations and refugees in Kenya. Jean-Paul holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law, a Bachelor of Laws (honors) from the University of Nairobi, and a Diploma of French Language Studies (DELF) in Level B1 from Alliance Française. He is fluent in English, French and Kiswahili.

Jean-Paul wants his daughter, wife, mother, sisters and every woman in his life to live in a just society where they are treated with dignity. For Jean-Paul, the law is the only guarantee for human rights. Without law, human rights are only aspirations. Jean-Paul is inspired by Nelson Mandela and his favorite quote is by Martin Luther King, Jr.: “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

Outside of work, Jean-Paul enjoys following global events and news, traveling and playing football.
