Civil Society Consultation on U.S. Domestic Efforts to Prevent & Respond to FGM/C

Policy Director, Shelby Quast, will represent Equality Now at this meeting hosted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The consultation will be an opportunity for the U.S. government, including representatives from the White House and other U.S. federal agencies, to hear from members of civil society working within communities to prevent female genital mutilation (FGM) and to provide support to those affected. Topics of discussion will include: (1) what is working, (2) lessons learned, (3) gaps in knowledge, support and services, and (4) opportunities for further collaboration between the U.S. government and civil society.

6 Month Solidarity Vigil For Chibok Schoolgirls

In recognition of the International Day of the Girl Child, join us in vigil for the 200+ Chibok Schoolgirls of Nigeria as we mark 6 months since their kidnapping by Boko Haram. Our partners in Nigeria have called on us to help them ensure that the call to #BringBackOurGirls is still loud and clear - join civil society, expert guest speakers and creatives in holding governments to account, especially Nigeria in its obligation to the Chibok girls and others living under threat of similar circumstances each day.

56th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR)

AGLDF/SOAWR Project Manager, Jane Serwanga, and Discrimination in Law Program Officer, Kavinya Makau, along with members of the Solidarity for African Women’s Rights (SOAWR) Coalition, will attend the 56th session of the ACHPR where the human rights situation in Africa will be discussed. During the session, the General Comment on the Maputo Protocol (Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa) will officially be launched, in the effort to help States to better protect women’s health and reproductive rights [Article 14(2)(c)] . SOAWR coalition members, including IPAS Africa Alliance and Centre for Human Rights, were instrumental in the preparation of the General Comment. There also will be a day devoted to strengthening relationships and cooperation between National Human Rights Institutions and NGOs. Learn more here.
