Equality Now mourns the passing of human rights activist Esther Chávez Cano Equality Now is deeply saddened by the death of Esther Chávez Cano on 25 December 2009. The founder of Casa Amiga, the first rape crisis center in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, Esther was a brave and fearless activist who tirelessly worked on behalf of victims of sexual and domestic violence. Esther played an essential role in bringing international attention to the issue of violence against women in Ciudad Juárez, and was one of the first to publicly condemn the government of Mexico's failure to deliver justice in hundreds of cases of femicide in the region. Equality Now worked closely with Esther in calling for an inquiry by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW Committee) into the Ciudad Juárez and Chihuahua femicides. Even as she battled cancer, Esther continued demanding justice and dedicating her life to women and children in her community. Equality Now and the human rights movement will terribly miss Esther and her commitment to making her community a safer place for women and children. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, the staff of Casa Amiga and all those who will follow Esther's footsteps to ensure that justice is secured for the women and girls in Ciudad Juárez and Chihuahua. The Chávez Cano family requests that donations in Esther's memory be sent to Casa Amiga (see account information below): Bank name: Banco Santander
