2004 FGM Fund Meeting

The 2004 meeting of the FGM Fund grantees was held in June in Nairobi, Kenya, and brought together with the FGM Fund grantees, nine ex-circumcisers from six African countries (Djibouti, Gambia, Guinea-Conakry, Kenya, Mali, and Tanzania), the first international gathering of former circumcisers. At this historic event, the women shared their experiences of transformation from circumcisers into activists now working to end the harmful practice. The FGM Fund grantees from ten African countries who participated in the meeting all called for the need for laws against FGM in countries that still do not have such laws and effective law enforcement when anti-FGM laws exist. In reviewing the progress of the campaign against FGM to date, the FGM Fund grantees noted that over the years the work of NGOs had steadily increased public awareness of the dangers of FGM, and that many more people, women and men, are speaking out against the practice.
