2003 FGM Fund Meeting The 2003 meeting of the FGM Fund grantees was held in July in Atlanta, Georgia, where the first known documented case of FGM in the United States was announced in April 2003. Activists from 9 African countries (Eritrea, Ethiopia, The Gambia, Guinea, Kenya, Mali, Senegal, Somalia, Tanzania) met in Atlanta to exchange ideas and strategize collectively on how best to work for the eradication of FGM in their own communities, and the grantee representatives also met with local organizers in African immigrant communities in Georgia to talk about effective strategies for outreach to end the underground practice. Strong support was expressed by meeting participants for the introduction of a state law in Georgia, and Equality Now ended its meeting at a press conference hosted by Senator Nadine Thomas to announce her sponsorship of a law against FGM in the state of Georgia.
